Dubai Police have introduced an AI-powered radar system to enhance road safety and enforce stricter traffic laws. These advanced radars can detect multiple violations, including speeding, red-light offences, lane violations, and distracted driving, ensuring motorists comply with regulations.

With fines, black points, and vehicle impoundment at stake, here’s a breakdown of the eight major violations detected by the new system and their associated penalties (Khaleej Times).

1. Speeding Violations

Exceeding the speed limit can lead to severe penalties:

  • Over 80 km/h above the limit

    • Fine: Dh3,000
    • Black Points: 23
    • Vehicle impoundment: 60 days (light vehicles)
  • Over 60 km/h above the limit

    • Fine: Dh2,000
    • Black Points: 12
    • Vehicle impoundment: 30 days (light vehicles)
  • Over 50 km/h above the limit: Dh1,000 fine

  • Over 40 km/h above the limit: Dh700 fine

  • Over 30 km/h above the limit: Dh600 fine

  • Over 20 km/h above the limit: Dh300 fine

2. Running a Red Light

Jumping a red light comes with severe consequences under UAE Traffic Law:

  • Fine: Dh1,000
  • Black Points: 12
  • Vehicle impoundment: 30 days
  • Vehicle release fee: Dh50,000 (Dubai-specific, as per Decree No. 30 of 2023)

3. Lane Discipline Violations

The AI radar system can detect:

  • Failing to stay in designated lanes: Dh400 fine
  • Driving on the hard shoulder
  • Crossing solid lines (forbidden for overtaking or turning)
  • Sudden swerving
  • Tailgating

To avoid tailgating fines, drivers should follow the ‘two-second rule’, ensuring a safe distance between vehicles.

4. Distracted Driving (Using a Mobile Phone)

AI radars detect hand movements and phone screen lights, penalizing distracted driving:

  • Fine: Dh800
  • Black Points: 4
  • Vehicle impoundment: 30 days

5. Not Wearing a Seat Belt

AI technology can distinguish between clothing and seat belts even in low-light conditions:

  • Fine: Dh400
  • Black Points: 4

6. Illegal Window Tinting

The radar system detects unauthorized window tinting violations:

  • Maximum allowable tint: 50% (side and rear windows)
  • Windshield tint: Should not exceed 15 cm (5.5 inches) in width
  • Fine for violations: Dh1,500
  • Vehicle impoundment: Possible in Dubai
  • Vehicle release fee: Dh10,000 (as per Decree No. 30 of 2023)

7. Noisy Vehicles and Illegal Modifications

Modifications that increase noise levels or enhance speed result in strict penalties under Article 2 of Decree No. 30 of 2023:

  • Fine: Dh2,000
  • Black Points: 12
  • Vehicle release fee: Up to Dh10,000

8. Driving with an Expired Registration

Driving an unregistered vehicle can lead to:

  • Fine: Dh500
  • Black Points: 4
  • Vehicle impoundment: 7 days
